John Daniel Hummell, 94, of Worthington, Ohio, passed away on May 15, 2018. Born on March 28, 1924, to Chester Holmes and Edith Marie Hummell of Brice, Ohio he worked originally on the family farm and then as a mechanical engineer. He loved his work, and finally stopped consulting for Ashland Chemical at the age of 89.
After graduating from Groveport Madison High School in 1942, John attended The Ohio State University where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and played the trumpet with the OSU marching band. After obtaining a master’s degree, John worked for Battelle Memorial Institute and subsequently several other consulting firms. He was instrumental in designing Columbus’s refuse and coal fired power plant and was president of Stilson Laboratories. After retirement he continued in private practice consulting for PPG, Ashland Chemical and Scotts Miracle-Gro Company.
John was a member of Brice United Methodist Church until he and his wife moved to Worthington in 1978. They then became members of Linworth United Methodist Church. He served on Groveport Madison school board for 16 years, 8 years as president.
John was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His innate happiness made him a friend to many. He enjoyed golf, bridge and tennis.
John is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marjorie Julianna (nee Bolg), his daughters Anne Christine Hummell, Jennifer Schoenfeld (Michael) and Nancy Ingham (William), grandchildren James (April) and Robert Schoenfeld and Sally, Scott and Lisa Ingham, and brother Richard Hummell. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Chester Hummell.
Memorial services will be held Monday, June 18 at Linworth United Methodist Church: 1:00 pm visitation with family, 2:00 pm service with light refreshments to follow.
