Anthony Likirdopulos

It is with great sadness that we announce Anthony (Tony) Likirdopulos, 84, of Lexington, KY (Worthington, OH) passed away on October 18, 2025 at Kobacker House, surrounded by his loving family, daughter Christina, son-in law Eric, and granddaughters Eleni and Alexa.

Tony was born on August 2, 1941 on the small island of Bozcaada, Turkey (formerly Tenedos). His parents were Constantine and Marika Likirdopulos, and he was the oldest of five children. He grew up playing soccer near the island’s “castle”, tending vineyards, and learning how to make shoes. However, as a Greek in Turkey, his opportunities were limited and he only achieved a sixth grade education. In 1964, he left his family and boarded a ship with a dream for a better life in America. During his trip, he met Anastasia (deceased 2024), a first-generation Greek-American from Kentucky, and they got married in 1965 in Cincinnati, OH. A couple years later, they moved to Lexington, KY.

He was the owner and sole employee of Tony’s Shoe Repair for over 50 years, retiring at the age of 80. During that time, he interacted with many people and became a downtown legend. His friendly face, honest demeanor, and impeccable craftsmanship were appreciated by his loyal customers, one of whom nicknamed him the “Mayor of Short Street”. He was also commissioned a Kentucky Colonel, and the Mayor of Lexington honored him with a proclamation of Tony Likirdopulos Day in 2021.

Not only did he have deep-seated pride for his craft, but also his dedication to his family did not go unnoticed. He persevered throughout the years to learn English, his third language, became a US citizen, and instilled the importance of hard work in his daughter. One of his proudest moments was seeing her be the first in the family to graduate from college. Her biggest honor was being his daughter. He made many sacrifices for his family, and his legacy will live on through his granddaughters, Eleni and Alexa, his greatest joys in life.

He loved tending to his vegetable garden, talking about history, and watching sports, especially soccer, UK basketball, and the Cincinnati Reds, and had an impressive ability to recall directions even though he never learned to drive. He was an incredible human who is greatly loved and will be missed by many. His memory is eternal in our hearts. Opa, Pappou, Opa! You’ve been reunited with Yiayia, the love of your life.
