Carol Margaret Spencer, 92, of Columbus, Ohio passed away with her daughter, Sally, by her side on January 1, 2023 at the Laurels of Worthington skilled nursing home in Worthington, Ohio.
Carol was born on August 26, 1930, in North Canton, Ohio, the 3rd child of Wilbur and Sydney Howe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Norman K. Spencer in July of 1994, her sister Susan Schlemmer, her brother Jim Howe and her 3rd son Mark E. Spencer in September of 2018.
She is survived by her sons Tom Spencer of Grants Pass, Oregon; Don Spencer of Clinton, Washington; Jim Spencer of Huntington Beach, California and Carl Spencer of Mount Vernon, Indiana; daughters Sally Weppler of Worthington, Ohio and Laura Spencer of Columbus, Ohio; brother-in-law Larry Spencer of Oregon, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Carol graduated from high school in Canton and was studying to be a nurse when she met and married Norman, an electrical engineer. She learned to become a strong woman as together they raised 7 children on a 10 acre plot of land in Clyde, Ohio. They farmed the land to grow, cultivate and preserve much of their own food.
Carol was dedicated to encouraging her family by her special cards, letters and gifts for birthdays and holidays. She continued to mother her emotionally handicapped daughter, Laura, as long as she had the strength. She continued to push herself to be independent.
She enjoyed music, played the piano, liked crossword puzzles, and doodling cute faces on the edges of the newspapers. She knitted many afghan blankets for her children. She enjoyed adult coloring books and word games.
Her favorite calming thought came from the Bible, Mark 4:39, When Jesus commanded the wind and sea to be quiet and still. She is now at peace with Him forevermore.
Special thanks to all who loved, encouraged and cared for her during her last years in Columbus, Ohio.
