Douglas E Conkle

August 31, 1953 — April 16, 2024

Douglas “Doug” E. Conkle, 70 passed away April 16, 2024. Douglas was born August 31, 1953, in Columbus, Ohio. He was a graduate of North High School and attended The Ohio State University and Washington State University after serving in the United States Army.

He is survived by the love of his life, Margaret, his daughters, Erika Gamble (Matthew), and Danielle Sloma (Michael) and grandchildren Landen (Gamble), Parker (Gamble), Brandon (Sloma), Celeste (Sloma) and Mason (Sloma). As an incredibly proud grandfather you could find him showing off their photos and bragging about their accomplishments.  He leaves behind his faithful companions Ana and Niko, his German Shepards and Charlie, Sylvester and Squishy his rescue cats who will miss him dearly.

Douglas was an avid sports fan who loved the Buckeyes and rooted for the underdog. He would watch all sports and enjoyed competition. Douglas participated in numerous sports throughout his life and ran multiple marathons. He enjoyed listening to music, reading the newspaper, picking up his grandchildren from school and being an unofficial member of a local animal rescue.

To many Douglas was known as a man that worked hard, couldn’t stand still and took time to care for countless of animals. To those that knew him best, knew him as one who loved deeply, was smart, caring, and showed empathy. Douglas had a tremendously big heart and exhibited acts of sacrifice and kindness throughout his life. Whether it was ensuring no person went without food, or clothing, stopping to help a motorist in need or simply being dependable and present, he was there for whomever needed him.

Douglas had several professions over the course of his life, but his time at The Ohio Expo Center was certainly his fondest. There he was able to make longtime friends, be an instrumental member of the staff and help serve millions of visitors each year. The Quarter Horse Congress was his most beloved event as he was able build relationships and often spoke about how he enjoyed the people and admired the showmanship.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to those that have shared their lovely memories of Douglas and continue to offer their support during this unexpected difficult time.
