Eric Robert Smoot, of Delaware, Ohio, passed away on February 22, 2026. He was born in Rhinebeck, New York, to Rev. Thomas Smoot and Joan Ericson Smoot.
Eric was preceded in death by his mother, Joan. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, and their beloved cat, Lucky; his father, Tom Smoot, and stepmother, Dolores Smoot; his brothers, Brian Smoot (Megan), Eric Fitzgerald (MaryAnna), and Matt Fitzgerald; his sister, Katy Smoot (Rafael); his brother-in-law, Mark Cheathem (Amber); his mother-in-law, Brenda Cheathem; eight nieces and nephews; and three godchildren.
Eric graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan University in 2009 with a degree in Religious Studies. He worked at Scott’s Miracle-Gro in Marysville, Ohio. He was active in various ministries at Maple Grove UMC in Clintonville, where his presence, kindness, and steady spirit will be deeply missed.
Eric was known for his laid-back personality and unending curiosity. He cared deeply about social justice, loved a good conversation, and was a playful, good-humored uncle and godfather. Above all, he was an incredibly devoted husband.
He loved good food and good drinks, his cats, spending time with family, traveling, reading, learning new things, sleeping late, and wearing his favorite Hawaiian shirts. He also loved nature and the outdoors, especially camping and spending time outside. He found joy in simple pleasures and in the people he loved most.
Friends and family are invited to gather for visitation at Maple Grove UMC on Saturday, March 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a memorial service in the sanctuary immediately following from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
