George David (Dave) Callahan, 76, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 26, 2025, surrounded by his wife and family. Dave was born in Beckley, W.V. on April 4, 1949.
Dave met the love of his life Cathy Kusic when he was 17 years old at the Ohio State fair. He joined the Navy then proposed to Cathy and they were married on December 27th, 1969, and remained deeply in love. Dave is survived by his wife Cathy and their three children that he was so proud of: Heather K. (Billy Gore), Melissa L. (Ed Solt) and Christopher D. (Amy) Callahan. Dave is also survived by his two grandchildren Sarah and Katie Solt that he loves being “Pa” to! He is also survived by his brother Dan Callahan and his two girls as well as brother-in-laws Jimmy Kusic, Johnny Kusic (Nancy), sister-in-law (Janet), nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Dave/ Dad excelled in everything he did. He worked with the mentally disabled at an early age. In the Navy he served on the USS Alexander Hamilton, a nuclear submarine, and served as the boat’s Supply Officer (king of the boat). During his service he was awarded the National Defense Service Metal, and the Good Conduct Award for Service.
Dave worked for more than 20 years at the Columbus Dispatch in management and earned his associates degree from Columbus Technical Institute as well as getting his real estate and insurance license. He also worked part time at church as the maintenance manager. He did all of this while raising and caring for his family.
He loved to play the guitar, sing to his children growing up and played with bands prior to the Navy. He loves the Beatles, Willie Nelson, Bob Seager, and many genres of music. He loved taking walks with Cathy in Darby Park and vacationing in Hilton Head Island with his family.
Dave is proceeded in death by his father: George W. Callahan, Mother Helen V. (Pittman) Howell, brothers: Bill and Tim Callahan.
Dave/ Dad will always be remembered for many wonderful things, but his greatest was his love and protection for Cathy and their family. He is the best husband and father that God could have provided to his family. Everyone who truly knew Dave will miss his hugs, love, sharp mind, intellect, profound sense of humor/ wit, laughter, great giver of advice, his loyalty and integrity throughout his entire life. He will be deeply missed here, and we know he is rejoicing in heaven with God.
