Georgianna Short

SHORT

Georgianna (Sam) Short, PhD, Dublin, Ohio formerly of Denver, Colorado, passed away July 12, 2015.  Georgianna is preceded in death by her parents, Walter (1987) and Virginia (White) Pohl (2014).  A graduate of Denver East High School, Class of 1960,Georgianna attained her BFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado in 1971, MA from Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas in 1974, and PhD from The Department of Art Education at The Ohio State University in 1995.  Georgianna was an art teacher at Fort Scott Junior High School from 1972 to 1977, Fort Scott, Kansas and Cherry Creek Middle School from 1979 to 1984 and Overland High School from 1984 to 1995, Englewood, Colorado.  During her tenure in the Department of Art Education at The Ohio State University, Dr. Short taught courses in research methodologies, pedagogy, ethnic studies and material culture, participated in the development of the licensure program in art education and was responsible for the student teaching program and the preservice education of art teachers.  She worked directly with students, teachers, and school districts within and beyond Franklin County.  She was a member of the Undergraduate and Licensure Committee and served on numerous university committees.  Dr.Short also acted as the Director of the Saturday Art Workshop, participated in The Ohio Partnership through the Arts Getty Foundation Grant, as well as the Transforming Education Through the Arts Annenburg Challenge Grant.  Dr. Short guided and advised numerous graduate students through their thesis and/or dissertation research and degree programs.  Dr. Short maintained a life-long interest in the visual arts, art education, and teacher education.  She had an enduring interest in the sustainability of material culture.  Dr. Short researched and traveled internationally to experience first hand various cultural settings and the cultural heritage of disenfranchised groups.  Her publications focused on the preservice education of art teachers, comparative art contexts, and the sustainability of cultural capitol.  Upon her retirement from The Ohio State University in 2009, Dr. Short was awarded the prestigious rank of Professor Emeritus, Faculty-Emeritus.  Sam leaves behind a legacy of educators who were influenced by her work, ideas, pedagogy, research, and writing.  A special thank you is extended to all the health care professionals and her neighborhood community who brought love, caring and support to Sam’s situation.  A Celebration of Life event for Dr. Short will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 3 pm.  Friends will be received from 2-3 pm prior to the service.  SHAW-DAVIS VICTORIAN VILLAGE CHAPEL, 34 West 2nd Avenue, Columbus, OH 43201, (www.shaw-davis.com), (614) 299-4155.  Those in attendance will have an opportunity to offer personal testimonials if they so wish.  Contributions in memory of Dr. Short can be made to the “Ohio Art Education Foundation”, 1867 Knollridge Court, Columbus, OH 43229 and to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
