Howard J. Spencer

Howard J. Spencer, born November 7th, 1944, in Marion, Ohio, passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on December 8th, 2025, in Columbus, Ohio. He was the beloved son of the late Naomi Miller (born Gettys) and Howard Spencer Sr.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; Naomi Miller and Howard Spencer Sr., as well as step-father Raymond Miller; brothers Fred Spencer and Larry Spencer, sister Tonda Aspell; son Butch Spencer, and daughter Crystal Lawhorn-Hughes.

He is survived by his steadfast and loving wife of 46 years, Connie Spencer (born Wilburn). His memory will also live on with his daughters Kathy Nolan and Teresa England (Randy), son Charles Spencer; grandchildren Destiny Peters (Corey), Hunter Spencer (Jack), Marissa Purcell, Amber Johnson, and Arianna Yates (Casey); great-grandchildren Maison, Camden, Elyanna, Raymone, Hayden, and Brantley; great-grand-dogs Stamp, Hank, and Laila; along with countless extended family members and friends. To know Howard was to love him, and he never met a stranger, only future friends.

Howard’s greatest joy was his family, and he lived every day with a heart wide open. To children, neighbors, and even casual acquaintances, he was “Grandpa”, a title he wore proudly. He was the man who showed up, cheered the loudest, and made everyone feel seen. Howard had even been awarded with a trophy by his grandchildren’s sports team for being the team’s mascot; a testament to his boundless energy and devotion. He was loyal, kind, generous, tenderhearted, and witty. He had a playful spirit, quick to joke about “giving a turkey a knuckle sandwich” for those he cared about. His love was fierce and unwavering. Howard loved to dance and sing; he was blessed with a wonderful voice and rhythm.

A proud Veteran, Howard served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War Era, enlisting alongside his late brother, Larry. He later built a career with and retired from Griffin Wheels, where he worked as a train tire manufacturer.

Howard’s positivity, passion, and larger-than-life spirit will be missed beyond measure. His legacy of loyalty and love will be carried on through those who had the immense honor of being deeply loved by him.

A graveside service will be held for close friends and family at his final resting place, Franklin Hills Memorial Gardens in Lithopolis, Ohio.
