Jacqueline Giles

June 8, 1929 — September 13, 2022

Jackie, the youngest of seven children, grew up on a farm in Marion, OH. At 13, Jackie had an illness that left her blind. Her sister, Margaret, and her husband, Fred, took Jackie to NYC to attend a school for the blind, where she learned braille. A lover of dogs, Jackie had many seeing-eye dogs. Her first dog, Suzy, was the first non-human member of Delta Gamma Sorority. Jackie attended Dennison University and later transferred and graduated from Ohio State.

She worked at Ohio Bell as a switchboard operator. She met her late husband, Albert, and they married in 1961, becoming stepmother to Tom and Doug. In November 1961, Jackie and Albert welcomed Scott.

She and Albert were active members of the Loyal Order of Moose.

Jackie was a member of the Northeast Lions Club and a past president. She was active in the American Council for the Blind (ACB) in Ohio. Jackie was a frequent volunteer at the Central Ohio Radio Reading Service (CORRS), now called Voicecorps.

Jackie loved people and entertaining and often hosted card parties. She was also an avid bowler and a member of the Blind Bowlers league. Another passion was attending and listening to Ohio State football games on the radio.

Jackie is survived by her sons, Tom Giles and Scott Giles, and grandchildren, Beth Giles Hart, Mindi Giles Thoman, Brett Giles, Sarah Giles Dunfee, and Christina Giles. She also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 19 at 1:00 pm at Union Cemetery in Columbus, OH. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Jackie's honor to the Seeing Eye at 1 Seeing Eye Way, Morristown, NJ 07960.
