James MacMullen, Sr

July 29, 1944 — May 20, 2021

James Rodney MacMullen, 1944-2021, passed away peacefully with Carla, his loving wife of 55 years, and eldest son, Jim, by side. James is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Dorothy MacMullen, and brother, John MacMullen. He is survived by his wife, Carla MacMullen, three sons, Jim and Amy MacMullen, John and Kendra MacMullen, and Jeff and Kristina MacMullen, as well as seven grandchildren, Rodney, Abbey, Ian, Avery, Will, Ewan, and Blythe MacMullen.

Following the example of his father, a life-long Baptist minister, James devoted 40 years to the local church, serving in four ministries as the Director of Music. James used his beautiful tenor voice and musical gifts to bless both congregants and community members. As a highlight of his life as a musician, James performed in Whales as both a soloist and chorister. Also a dedicated music educator, he taught for 38 years. For James, quality time with his wife, children, and grandchildren brought him the deepest joy. He also held a love for the breezes of Lake Michigan, excellent coffee, and any variety of homemade fruit pie.

A quiet and gentle man, James loved the Lord and was a faithful, loving husband. He cherished his sons and their wives, and grandchildren with unconditional love. Near or far, they were always in his thoughts and prayers. Shaped by his Nova Scotian heritage, James was dignified, always willing to laugh, a classy dresser, and a seaman at heart. Those in his life could count him both a listener and counselor, as he always spoke through the lens of a grateful heart. James, your beautiful voice and loving spirit will be missed deeply, but now you are singing with the Lord in your heavenly home. You are loved and appreciated beyond measure, and until we meet again, you will live in our hearts.
