Janet Reitter

Janet Gail Yates Reitter, age 77, passed away at home Friday, September 25, 2015 under the care of Viaquest Hospice and Granny Nannies, with family members and friends nearby. Janet was born July 10, 1938 in Jeriel (frequently called Lost Creek), Kentucky, in Carter Co. She was the fourth child of Richie Yates and Carrie Ratcliff Yates. Preceeded in Death by older sister Frances Yates Cook, brothers, Charles Yates and Herman (Hap) Yates, and two nephews, Phillip Cook and Ron Cook. Survived by daughter Carrie Reitter (Wally) and grandson Neil Carl of Columbus, OH, sister Mary Ellen Yates Miller of Bowling Green, KY; nephews James Miller (Wilma) of Bowling Green, KY, Frederick Miller (Lynne) of Louisville, KY, Ruth Miller (Ergin Guney) of San Francisco, CA, Great niece, Marietta Miller, great nephew, Jim Turner Miller of Louisville, KY, sister-in-law, Evelyn Yates of Ashland, KY, and many other family members and friends.
Growing up, she divided her time between her maternal grandparents' home in Lost Creek, and her parents' home in Willard, Kentucky. She was the favorite grandchild of her maternal grandparents, Hiram Ratcliff and Mary Ellen Donahue Ratcliff. After graduating from Hitchins High School, she moved to Columbus to work, and then met and married Alan Reitter.  They had one daughter, Carrie. Janet loved to travel, decorate, read, shop for antiques, watch old western movies, laugh, and spend time with her beloved grandson, Neil.
Janet attended college at The Ohio State University and Western Kentucky University, graduating Cum Laude from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work and Sociology. She had a long career as a Licensed Social Worker in various capacities until her retirement from the Franklin County Department of Human Services, Office on Aging several years ago. She will be missed by her former coworkers, and was known for her fiesty nature and genuine desire to help other people through her work.
Memorial Services for Janet will be Saturday, October 10 at 3:00 pm, at Shaw-Davis Funeral Home, 4341 N. High St., Columbus, OH. 614-262-2600. Pastor Frank Carl officiating, and Don Hales will play guitar.  Donations may be made to Viaquest Foundation, 525 Metro Place N., Dublin, OH 43017.
