Johnny Ray Ooten, known affectionately as John, Pops, Papa, Papal, Grandpa, or Grandfather, passed away peacefully at 67 on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at Doctors West Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Ironton, Ohio, on November 30, 1957, Johnny was the son of the late Rush and Bessie Ooten. He took great pride in his lifelong career as a mason, helping to build many schools. A true outdoorsman, he found peace fishing, canoeing, and tending his yard and garden. He loved relaxing on the patio with a cold beer, observing birds, and watching his grandchildren play. An avid football fan, Johnny was a loyal supporter of the Green Bay Packers, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Dallas Cowboys.
Johnny will be remembered for his warm, welcoming spirit. He made everyone feel loved, offering a friendly wave, a cheerful "Good morning," or asking about your day. He ended every day with a heartfelt "Goodnight, I love you," often followed by "I love you more."He was preceded in death by his parents, Rush and Bessie Ooten; his siblings Grover Ooten and Bertha Mullins; and many life long friends.
Johnny is survived by the mother of his children, Linda Ooten; his children, Edna Soulivong, John Ooten (Rachel), and Melinda Ooten-Woods (Charles). He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. His surviving siblings include Pearl Fankhouser, Wallace (the late Constance Ooten), Vickie (the late Jerry Beeman), Bessie (Jeffrey Jones), Kathy (Aaron Lehman), and Anetta Simms. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Debbie Ooten (the late Grover Ooten). His dear friends, Karl Bailey, Brad Perkins, and David Rodriguez.

Following the service at the cemetery a gathering will be held at Eagle Pavilion at Rotary Lake - Fryer Park 3670 Discovery Dr Grove City, Oh 43123.
