June Marie Swies, 97, died peacefully at home in Gahanna, Ohio on Saturday, February 14, 2026. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Swies, parents, Daniel and Eva Allen, and her sister, Marjorie Filipello. She is survived by her children: Skip (Marj,) Susan Rosenberg, Mark (Kathy,) Judith Swies, Sandra McClellan, and Matthew (Christine,) and her sister Evelyn Katsion. She was the proud and devoted grandma to Adam (Nikki,) Nathan (Tabitha,) Lauren, Jonathan (Sarah,) Dustin (Cortnie,) David, Mallory (Jared,) Kelsey (Ryan,) Woody, Estella and Sophia. She was beloved “Great Gramma June” to Kendall, Karson, Adeline, Hazel, Emelia, Parker, Aiden, Eleanor, Emma, Grace, Oscar, and Alba. Her nieces and nephews, cousins, and large extended family all have fond and amusing memories of their times with June.
She was born November 20, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois and lived there until marrying Frank in 1952. Together they raised their growing family in Providence, Rhode Island, Aurora, Illinois and finally, Gahanna, Ohio which both of them considered to be the promised land. June had a vast network of devoted friends from her many experiences at work and at play. She was an artist at heart, and she loved painting, ceramics, and silk screening. She was an accomplished pianist and encouraged all of her children to study and enjoy music. She sang with the ‘Singing Moms’ and ‘Entertainers’ vocal groups for 50 years. June played an active role at Stonybrook Methodist Church, singing in the choir, serving at weddings and teaching Sunday school for special needs children. Because she loved children, she decided to drive a school bus after the last child left the nest. June was active with the VFW, Historical Society, Art League and Child Conservation League. She led Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops, and she was a life member of Eastern Star. As an advisory board member of the Gahanna Assembly of Rainbow Girls, June was honored to receive the auspicious Grand Cross of Color medallion.
Anyone who knew June would agree she was game for many adventures. She loved travelling to Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Alaska, Colorado, Texas, Indiana and Illinois to spend time with family and experience the outdoors together. She travelled extensively throughout Ohio and the Midwest on birding expeditions, and she took many road trips with girlfriends. Late in her life she parachuted, ziplined, and rode a hot air balloon. June never met a stranger in her life and could be counted on to tell stories of her long, full, faith-filled and adventurous life. She was truly the salt of the earth, and she wove a beautiful tapestry of love and service. To be loved beyond words is a great treasure, and that was June’s gift to all who knew her.
The family invites all to attend a Memorial to celebrate June’s memory on Saturday, March 21st from 1-3 with visitation prior at Stonybrook Church, 485 Cherry Bottom Rd, Gahanna, OH 43230.
