It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mark Rayburn-Velco on May 24, 2026. He was 58 years old.
Born on October 12, 1967 in Chicago, Mark was a proud alumnus of The Ohio State University. He later worked in the University’s Information Technology department, where he proudly served his alma mater and fellow Buckeyes.
A gentle and loving soul, Mark was known for his sense of humor, a smile that could light up even the darkest room, and his
unabashed love of all things “geek.” From Saturday morning cartoons like Scooby-Doo and Bluey to comic books, yoga, Lego building, and mathematics, Mark embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. A true Lego Master and gifted mathematician, Mark was also fluent in both English and German.
Above all else, Mark was devoted to his son, Aidric, whom he adopted as an infant and loved unconditionally. Being a father was one of the greatest joys of Mark’s life — a role he both cherished deeply and took seriously.
In January 2022, Mark met the love of his life, Brent Rayburn-Velco, and together they built a beautiful life. After only two dates, Brent told his sister that Mark was “the one” and that he would one day marry the soft-spoken man who had captured his heart. The two were married at Columbus City Hall on July 20, 2023.
Mark is survived by his loving husband, Brent Rayburn-Velco; his son, Aidric Velco; his sister, Tracy Meyer, and brother-in-law, Larry Meyer; his niece, Audrey Claire Meyer; and his nephew, Nicholas Alexander Meyer. He is also survived by countless extended family members and dear friends across the United States and around the world. Mark was deeply loved by all who knew him.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Alexander Velco; his mother, Jackie Velco; and his grandparents, Steven Velco, Mary Velco, Jack Hickerson, and Ovelle Hickerson.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for Summer 2026. In honor of Mark’s memory, we ask that you cherish one another and remember how fleeting time can be. “All you need is love” was a mantra Mark carried throughout his life.
