Melissa Harper-Kuehnl

Melissa Harper-Kuehnl (born Melissa Jean Schuppert), 70, of Columbus OH, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, July 26th, 2026. Melissa was born in Hollywood California, January 30th, 1956, to Raymond Schuppert and Vivian “Jean” Schuppert (born Muthler, later remarried as Shircliff). Melissa was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Kuehnl, father Raymond Schuppert, Mother Vivian “Jean” Shircliff and stepfather James “JD” Shircliff.

Melissa was passionate about the arts in all forms, inheriting her late mother’s talents by focusing on watercolor and acrylic painting. She would often share her love of art with others by painting, first homes, cherished pets, or even a favorite musical artist, as personalized gifts for those closest to her. There was always music playing in her home, ranging from Stevie Nicks and The Beatles to P!nk and John Bon Jovi. Her wardrobe, backyard landscaping, and interior design style all also highlighted her creativity and colorful personality.

She attended Ohio University as a part of their Performing Arts Program with a focus in Theater. Melissa carried the love of theater long after her time at OU, with one of her favorite past times including going to one of the several Columbus theaters to see plays and musicals as they came through the city.

She was an all-star host, and loved throwing parties for the Kentucky Derby each year, or even just small weekend gatherings for friends. No matter the size of the event, Melissa loved being the home that all her loved ones could gather at.

Melissa was not only a devoted mother to her three children, but also many furry four-legged K9 family members over the years. Her BFFF’s (best furry friends forever) could always be seen trailing closely behind her at mealtimes, knowing that she put special pieces of boiled chicken on her plate for them to share with her.

Melissa taught all those around her about strength, as she battled several forms of cancer the last 17 years of her life. She still made sure holidays and birthdays were special, doing all she could to be present at any event even if she was not physically able to be there. She was a kind and loyal friend, holding many of her friendships for well over 30+ years. Known as the “cool” mom too all, Melissa will be greatly missed by all those who loved her.

Melissa is survived by her children, son Liam “Ryan” Harper, son Raymond “Ray” Harper, daughter Samantha Kuehnl, brother Scott Schuppert and many other family members and friends.

The family will be planning a celebration of life in the Fall and will share information as it is finalized.
