Philip "Phil" Szudlo, born on May 1, 1945, in Bedford, Ohio, to Frank and Elizabeth Szudlo, passed away peacefully on the morning of Thursday May 2nd, 2024.
Phil was a man of robust spirit and tender heart. Beneath his gruff exterior was a soft, sweet soul who cared deeply for everyone around him, often times at the expense of himself.
For many years, Phil worked as a skilled butcher at the Brown Derby in Cleveland, Ohio, where his authentic, down-to-earth nature made him a beloved figure. He had the uncanny ability to become the favorite of every room he entered, a fact that puzzled him but was clear to everyone else. His engaging and caring personality made him not only a favorite among his peers but also a cherished presence in his assisted living community, where he was jokingly dubbed their unofficial tour guide.
Phil's generosity was legendary, extending from his neighbors to the nurses at the hospital who adored him. As a devoted sports fan, he never missed a game of his beloved Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers, or Guardians, celebrating each triumph and mourning every defeat. Phil also spent many of his youthful days caddying and playing as a scratch golfer, which brought him countless joyful memories and lifelong friendships, fostering his passion for sports and camaraderie.
Phil was always eager to hear about anyone’s life and happily shared in their successes and challenges. He was a proud father and grandfather, thoroughly involved in the lives of his son, Brian, daughter-in-law, Mackenzie, and grandchildren Nikki, Mikayla, Sarah, Spencer, and Aubri. His "grand-puppies" also adored him, always excitedly greeting him as if he was their own.
Phil's memory will also be cherished through the many stories shared by those who knew him, each narrative underscoring his remarkable ability to listen genuinely and supportively, making everyone feel truly seen and heard.
Preceded in death by his parents and his son, Michael, Phil's legacy of kindness and genuine interest in the well-being of others will continue to inspire all who knew him. He leaves behind a community richer for his presence and a family grateful for his boundless love.
Services to celebrate Phil's life will be held at All Saints Catholic Cemetery in Northfield, Ohio, on Friday, May 10th at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to either St. Jude’s or the American Legion, two charities that Phil cared for and donated to passionately.
Rest in Heaven, Phil. You may have left this world, but you will never leave the hearts of those you touched. We love you and will continue striving to make you proud.
