Russell Harrington Bettis Jr., age 81, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025, at Riverside Methodist Hospital. Born on October 6, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Virginia Power Bettis Oderr and Russell Harrington Bettis Sr., Russell lived a life marked by dedication, kindness, and quiet strength.
In 1968, he married the love of his life, Anita Spencer, in Huntsville, Ohio. Their marriage of 54 years was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Anita preceded him in death, along with his parents and beloved sisters, Beverly B. Dunn and Sandra B. Voss.
Russ and Anita made Columbus home for nearly all their adult lives. Very much a patriot, Russ loved the United States and was a proud veteran of the United States Coast Guard. He was a lifelong entrepreneur, owning and operating a service station, car wash, and truck rental business. His mechanical aptitude and resourcefulness were matched only by his quick wit and warm sense of humor, which brought joy to all who knew him. He had a remarkable ability to fix just about anything and was always ready with a clever remark or a helping hand.
Despite enduring physical pain, Russell never complained. He faced each day with a smile and a positive spirit, reminding those around him to "stop and smell the roses." His greatest joy came from time spent with Anita and their extended family, especially the many nieces and nephews who cherished him greatly.
Russell was laid to rest alongside Anita at Union Cemetery on May 21, 2025, in a private burial service attended by family. A memorial service celebrating Russell’s life will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 11 AM at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Upper Arlington.
Many thanks to the staff at Danbury Columbus who provided wonderful care and attention to Russ and Anita, and to the many friends they made at Danbury and who enriched their lives greatly.
Russell’s legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
