Sheila Elizabeth Baker December 14, 1938 – Hove, England April 14, 2026 – Columbus, Ohio
Sheila Baker, age 87, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, in Columbus, Ohio.
Born in Hove, England, on December 14, 1938, she was the youngest child of Richard and Mabel Mann and the sister of Daphne. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Norman Baker.
Sheila grew up in England before following Norman to Northern Rhodesia, where they were married, and later to Buffalo, New York, in 1969. There, they raised their family and built a life for 56 years before relocating to Columbus, Ohio, in 2025.
Known as “Sheila” in her early years, she later became “Mrs. Bakes” to her sons’ many friends, “Granny” to her cherished grandchildren, and “Miss Sheila” to the caregivers who looked after her in her final year. Her warm smile and infectious laugh will be remembered by all who knew her.
Sheila was the heart of her family—the steady, caring presence who made everything feel like home. She and Norman hosted legendary dinner parties for decades, opening their home to friends and family alike. Their house became a gathering place where Sheila welcomed everyone with generous meals, baked treats, and genuine warmth.
Her grandchildren became the center of her world. She delighted in sending packages for every occasion, sewing dresses for Christmas and Easter, and creating her famous Halloween costumes—anticipated months in advance. Christmas held a special place in her heart; she began preparing each year in the spring, much to Norman’s chagrin and everyone else’s joy.
Beyond her devotion to family, Sheila was deeply committed to her community. She volunteered generously, supporting events such as the White Elephant church fundraiser and the Nichols Nearly New Sale. She also had a gift for staying connected—sending thoughtful cards for every imaginable occasion, a gesture that brought happiness to many.
She is survived by her sons, Brooke (Kimberly) and Todd (Christiane), and her grandchildren, Ashleigh, Kyra, Noah, and Sophie. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Harrison on 5th and Capital City Hospice for their compassionate care, dignity, and kindness during Sheila’s final year.
Memorial services are not currently planned.
