Timothy James Downerd, affectionately known to all as TJ, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 10. Born on May 7, 1980, in Columbus, Ohio, TJ brought warmth, energy, and heart into the lives of everyone who knew him.
TJ’s greatest pride, joy, and the center of his world was his beloved son, Jaylin Cade. Nothing meant more to him than being Jaylin's father, and the immense love, pride, and devotion he had for his son will forever remain his most enduring legacy.
He is survived by his devoted parents, James and Deborah Downerd; his brother, Joseph Downerd (Cara); and his cherished nephews, Cooper Downerd and JaShaun Cade, both of whom held a very special place in his heart. He is also survived by a loving circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, close friends, teammates, and countless players whose lives he touched over the years.
TJ was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leo and Dorothy Downerd and Darrell and Margaret Whitmer.
A true passion that defined TJ was his love for baseball. He was proud to be a certified umpire for 25 plus years as well as a coach. On the field, he was far more than just a coach—he was a mentor, a leader, and a constant source of encouragement. He poured his heart into teaching teamwork, confidence, and sportsmanship, leaving a lasting impact on every player he guided. Beyond coaching, TJ was a passionate, lifelong sports fan who proudly rooted for the Cincinnati Reds, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Ohio State Buckeyes, never missing an opportunity to cheer on his favorite teams. When he wasn't at the ballpark or watching the game, TJ was most likely found in the kitchen or behind the grill. Cooking was his labor of love—a way to bring people together, share stories, and celebrate the good times over a great meal.
TJ will be remembered for his big heart, his infectious laugh, and the genuine joy he brought to every moment shared with family and friends. While he will be deeply missed, his spirit lives on in the heart of his son, his family, and the community he impacted so deeply.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Boys and Girls Club of Central Ohio in TJ’s memory.
