Eugene Carl Lynd, age 80, passed away peacefully in his home on February 13, 2021. He is preceded in death by his wife Carmen and daughter Suzanne. He is survived by his daughter Clare (Marqis), brother Chuck (Sheila), sister Connie (Roger), cousin Jay (Mary), sister-in-law Marge, grandchildren Jonah, Isaiah, and April, god-grandson Charlie, and a large extended family.
Born and raised in Ironton, Ohio, Gene married the hometown sweetheart he’d known since first grade, and held Ironton friends and memories close. He graduated from Kenyon College with a BA in Philosophy in 1962 and entered the emergent field of computer programming. He had a successful 50+ year career as a systems programmer for mainframe computers at DCSC, consulting even on the Y2K crisis. To critics of his work with the Department of Defense he would quip, “Who do you want working there? A liberal like me or Dr. Strangelove?” Settled in Columbus, he was a loyal Buckeye football fan—his daughter Suzy knew the answer to any sports-related question: “Go Bucks!” He was a generous patron of local arts and theater. Above all, he adored his family, spent many Saturdays taking Suzy out for “bowling, lunch, and a movie.” He passed along his quick dry wit to both of his daughters, as well as his appreciation for travel, good movies, and good art. He loved quoting Suzyisms, could always make Clare laugh, and his family all knew that the best spot at a gathering was near Gene to hear his soft spoken yet astute observations. Always a gentle presence, at the end he enjoyed the deer who would pass through his yard and the antics of his god-grandson Charlie. He lived a long life bringing smiles and stability to others, and he will be deeply missed.
