Hazel Meeks

Hazel Maude Cooley Meeks was born July 2, 1948 in Richmond, VA. At an early age Hazel and her mother moved to Ashland, KY, where she was raised with her cousins Susan and Robbie Keeton. She received loving guidance from her maternal grandparents Aaron and Hazel Keeton, and aunt Maude Keeton. While living in Ashland, Hazel attended Booker T. Washington School and was baptized at New Hope Baptist Church. Upon moving to Columbus, Ohio, Hazel attended Franklin Junior High and graduated from East High School. She received and associates degree from Franklin University. During her working years, she was employed by Ohio Bell, Sears, and retired from Discover Card.

On August 6, 1967, Hazel married William “Bill” Meeks, Sr. To this union, three sons were born: William “Bill-Bill” Meeks, Jr., Christopher “Chris”, and Anthony.

Hazel enjoyed word find puzzles, Bid Whist, and hosting family Thanksgiving dinners. Her home was the gathering place for friends and family.

On Sunday, November 8, 2020, Hazel departed this life. She is reunited in death with her husband, and two sons Chris and Anthony. Left to cherish fond memories are her mother Phyllis K. Cooley Heard, son William “Bill-Bill” Meeks, Jr., three grandchildren Trae, Keian, and Averi Meeks, caregiver Carrie Newman, Niecy and John, Lynn, Vincent, and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service in her honor will be held on Monday November 16, 2020 at the Shaw-Davis Funeral Homes Clintonville Chapel, 4341 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio 43214. The family will receive guests from 11 am to 12 pm, with the service beginning at 12 pm. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the number in attendance will be limited to 50; masks and social distancing will be required while visiting the funeral home.
