Merilyn Richards

July 21, 1932 — November 25, 2019

Merilyn Jean Chaffee Richards passed away on November 25th, 2019, peacefully at the Koebacker house after a long illness. Merilyn was the fourth child born to Mabel Laura Rebecca (Staib) Chaffee and the Rev. Dr. Merrill Adna Chaffee. She was born in Ravenna, Ohio, July 21, 1932. She was proceeded in death by her parents and siblings; Vernita C Nail, Richard W. Chaffee, Ruth J. Reilly and her foster brother, B. Wilfred Wilenius.

Merilyn attended Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, Ohio and graduated from Saint Luke’s School of Nursing (Case Western Reserve) in 1954.

Merilyn is survived by the love of her life, Dr. David M. Richards and in August celebrated with her family sixty-five wonderful adventure filled years. Together they have three children. Mrs. Diane R. (Eric) Budendorf; Dr. David R. Richards (Michelle); Dr. Dale R. Richards. Grandchildren: Dr. Deric R. (Alison R.) Budendorf; Mr. Andrew D. (Sydney A.) Budendorf; Morgan E. Richards and Adrian M. Kalnas; Ms. Sydney E. Richards; Ms. Sarah A. Richards; Great Grandchildren: Cameron D. Budendorf; Aurora L. Budendorf. Her Sister-In-Law, Lois E. Chaffee and many adored Nieces and Nephews. Merilyn’s passion and pride was her precious family.

She was always involved in many activities throughout her life. Most important to her was serving her Church and supporting her husband in his profession through The Osteopathic Advocates, (she served as President of both Ohio and Texas State Auxiliaries.) She served as “First Lady” to the Presidency at The University of North Texas Health Science Center, During her husband’s tenure as its President from 1986-1999. Merilyn received the Yellow Rose of Texas Honorary designation from the Governor of Texas and The University of north Texas Founder’s Medal.

The Celebration of Merilyn’s Life will be held at the Powell United Methodist Church, 825 E. Olentangy St., Powell, Ohio. Saturday, December 14th at 3pm.  The Rev. Larry Brown and

The Rev. Dr. Kenneth W. Chalker (Nephew) will officiate the service with a light reception following the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Kobacker (Hospice) House, 800 McConnell Dr., Columbus, Ohio 43214
