Mr. Wayne, The Busman, Mayor of the Short North and self-proclaimed Historian of the Short North. All names we have heard and think about one face that always had a smile attached to it. That was Mr. Wayne Dewitt Washburn. He started his life and decided to serve anyone who asked him. At 17 he joined the Marine Corps, at 25 he started his own business, he had love and became a father and when he became involved at a local church, he became their right-hand man for over 30 years. There is no way to put all of Wayne's triumphs on one single piece of paper and to read his life story would take a while. But a few things he should be remembered for is how he would always say yes. How every thanksgiving and Christmas was spent at the church with his daughters handing out meals to those less fortunate. How he would loan his last 10$ to someone in need never really expecting to be paid back. Finally, how he loved his family right up until the end. There is one thing Wayne would have you all know and that is he was a god loving man, and that we should all show respect and compassion for those around us at all times. The one thing we can all remember is how many people he has impacted and know that his gracious, giving nature will continue to spread far into the world.
On a personal note, I got to say, as his daughter I have taken the oath that all firefighters take very seriously and that is Service Before Self. That is something I know Wayne embodied more than anyone I have ever known. He was the most important man in my life and my heart broke knowing I have to continue without him. But in everything I do I will honor him and anyone I come into contact with.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at the Dream Center in the Short North. Due to COVID restrictions, services are limited to immediate family and friends.
